Can We Talk About the Tariffs?
“Does anybody really know what’s going on with the tariff threats on wine?”
“Does anybody really know what’s going on with the tariff threats on wine?”
This is a question I’ve been asked on a daily basis for about a month now.
Sadly, my answer is just as vague:
“We have no idea how things will turn out yet, but we’re trying to prepare for anything.”
I had wanted to release a special episode of The Wine Press podcast today that talks about how the tariffs are affecting the wine industry across the board. That episode was pulled when the Trump administration decided to pause the threatened tariffs on most countries yesterday.
There’s still a lot to talk about here, which is why I’m asking for your input on things for an updated version of the tariffs podcast, whenever the time is right to release it.
The constant will-they-won’t-they regarding astronomical price hikes on imported wine, beer, and spirits has been maddening for consumers and American beverage professionals alike. It’s been an issue that has made for some terrifying headlines pretty much since January 20 of this year, and I’ve seen too many people panic buying cases of European wine over the past few weeks to not talk about this ongoing issue.
So I’d like to ask you, the Bombshell that you are, to lend your thoughts on the issue. The comments section, typically a paid feature, is open to all on this article. And I have a few survey questions below if you’d like to leave an anonymous response. In the podcast episode, we’ll also talk about some ways to build your home cellar if you are looking to stock up on imported beverages in the near future. Let me know your thoughts below!
Thank you for participating! Stay tuned for the results, and an updated version of The Wine Press podcast.
I live in Europe (Spain), and just a couple of weeks ago there was some news coverage about this. Wine producers in Portugal and Spain are freaking out due to the impact tariffs will have on their businesses, as the US is one of their main export markets.
I’m not sure what is going on with the tariffs to be honest. Some say Trump is purposefully tanking the market with tariffs so that his buddies can buy in the dip and sell high when he lifts them. In my view Trump is someone that is usually all talk considering how little he ever follows through on his threats, I remember him promising Kim Jong Un “Fire and Fury” before “falling in love” with him. But tariffs seem to be something he really believes in so it seems impossible to predict what his next step will be.
I just want to add to the conversation how here in Canada every store is promoting their Canadian made products while shoppers are purposefully boycotting American made stuff, it’s part of a movement known as “Buy Canadian.” It’s strange seeing so many Canadian flags in stores and nationalistic messaging everywhere, Canada is not as patriotic usually as the USA, but it is nice to see everyone coming together when our country is being threatened by America.
